Project description
The study aimed to learn more about what constitutes successful mathematics teaching from both a German and an international perspective - successful from the perspective of the teachers and students involved, from the standpoint of external, trained observers, and according to measured learning outcomes such as achievement and subject interest. The national study is linked to the OECD's international Global Teaching InSights: A video study of teaching. With the connection to the international study, it was possible to compare German mathematics education with teaching in seven other countries and to describe how different mathematics education looks in different cultures and how different the correlations with learning results and motivational characteristics of the students are.
The study includes a preliminary study (2016-2017) and a main study (2017-2020). The pre-study aimed, among other things, to test the instruments used for the main study and to develop an evaluation system for the video recordings and teaching materials.
A second follow-up survey and the videography of another lesson on any mathematical topic extended the international study design. The national extensions are intended to allow us to examine the stability of the effects of instruction over a more extended period and to look at historical changes in instruction by comparing them with data from the TIMSS video study in 1995. The Study follows major international large-scale assessment studies such as TIMSS, PISA, and the Teaching and Learning International Survey. (IQB)

Further information
Further information on the study can be found here.
TVD is a study within the framework of the OECD's TALIS Video Study with national extensions. The TALIS Video Study Germany (TVD) is a stand-alone project that is completely independent of the Teaching and Learning International Survey. Shortly before publication, the OECD decided to change the name to Global Teaching Insights (GTI).
Notes on the use of the data
Variable and value labels are partially missing from all partial data sets of the study. Where possible, they were added automatically. When using the data, additional labels may have to be added with the help of the scale manual and the questionnaires. The pre, post and follow-up questionnaires are available at the FDZ and will be supplied when the data are requested.
