The Institute for Educational Quality Improvement
The Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) is an academic institute that supports the 16 states (Länder) of the Federal Republic of Germany in improving and assuring the quality of its educational system. The IQB’s work is founded on the educational standards adopted by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany. These standards define the competencies that students should have developed by certain points in their school career. The IQB is responsible for regularly monitoring the extent to which Germany’s schools are achieving these targets (educational monitoring). It helps the states put the standards, which are intended to serve as the main framework guiding all actors in the education system, into practice (implementation). The IQB is also one of the leading institutes actively engaged in empirical educational research in Germany (research).
