Responding to Diversity in Learning Needs

Research in the area of “Responding to Diversity in Learning Needs” focuses on groups of students who require tailored support. This includes, in particular, children and young people with special educational needs, as well as those from immigrant and socioeconomically disadvantaged families. Immigration-related and socioeconomic disparities in educational outcomes are cross-cutting issues relevant to many of the IQB’s projects, including the IQB Trends in Student Achievement. In addition, the IQB conducts research projects on various aspects of the school experience of children and young people from immigrant and socioeconomically disadvantaged families. This includes recording and analysing students’ heritage-language competences and aspects of social integration. In this research area, the IQB collaborates closely with the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM) at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Language and Reading Competences 🔗

Another key focus of the IQB’s research is the language competences of children and young people, which form a crucial foundation for learning across nearly all subjects. Research projects at the IQB examine the acquisition, assessment and support of language and reading competences, as well as links between language competences and educational achievement. Furthermore, the research examines the professional competences of teachers and pedagogical staff in supporting language development in the classroom.

Gender Disparities 🔗

Gender disparities are a cross-cutting issue relevant to many of the IQB’s projects, including the IQB Trends in Student Achievement. In addition, the IQB examines gender disparities across various research projects, focusing on academic competences and motivational characteristics, as well as changes in these disparities over time across cohorts. Further key areas of research address questions relating to gender stereotypes and gender role orientations, as well as their significance for educational outcomes and teachers’ assessments.
