Joint Pool of Tasks for Abitur Examinations

Educational standards for the General Higher Education Entrance Qualification (Abitur) have been established for the subjects German, mathematics, English and French (as a continued foreign language), as well as for the science subjects biology, chemistry, and physics. Since 2017 (German, mathematics, English, and French) and 2025 (biology, chemistry, and physics), task pools for the Abitur examinations have been available to the federal states. The respective educational standards for the General Higher Education Entrance Qualification provide the basis for the development of examination tasks. Additionally, the German states have agreed on common subject-specific regulations that further specify the educational standards in more detail (the so-called “supplementary documents”).

The educational standards for the General Higher Education Entrance Qualification specify the subject-specific competences to be developed through instruction in German, mathematics, English, French, biology, chemistry, and physics. Overall, the educational standards outline the knowledge, skills and abilities that students are generally expected to possess by the time they graduate from secondary school with the General Higher Education Entrance Qualification.

Furthermore, the educational standards specify which competences can be assessed through examination tasks and according to which criteria students’ performance in the Abitur examinations should be evaluated.

The tasks contained in the joint pool, which are based on the educational standards, make it possible to assess whether students have acquired the competences described in those standards.
