To enhance the quality of schools and teaching at the lower secondary level, various programmes for teachers, schools, educational administrators, and policymakers are developed at the IQB. These include:

VERA-8

The Nationwide Achievement Tests in Grade 8 (VERA-8) assess how students in each class already meet the educational standards in the subjects of German and Mathematics. The results are intended for use in everyday school practice - primarily by teachers and headteachers, and in some federal states also by the school supervisory authorities.

IQB Trends in Student Achievement at Lower Secondary Level

The IQB Trends in Student Achievement regularly assess how students across all German federal states meet the educational standards at the end of Grade 9, alternating between the subjects of German, English, and French on the one hand, and Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry on the other. The results give the federal states a clearer picture of the strengths and weaknesses of their school systems and are intended to support educational administrators and policymakers in monitoring and improving the school system.

Pilot and Standardisation Studies

Before test items are used nationwide for educational monitoring, they are trialled in pilot and standardisation studies. Pilot studies aim to optimise test items, while data from standardisation studies inform the development of proficiency level models.
