Upper Secondary Level

To ensure consistent standards in the Abitur examinations across the German federal states and to maintain high quality, the IQB has been coordinating the annual development of Joint Pools of Abitur Exam Tasks of the Federal States since 2017.

Joint Pools of Abitur Exam Tasks of the Federal States

Since 2017, the German federal states have had access to pools of exam tasks for Abitur exams in German, Mathematics, English, and French. Pools for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics have been available since 2025. These Joint Pools of Abitur Exam Tasks help to align the Abitur exams across the federal states.

Educational Standards for the General Higher Education Entrance Qualification

The pools of Abitur exam tasks for seven subjects are developed in line with the respective KMK educational standards for the General Higher Education Entrance Qualification. The educational standards define subject-specific competences that students are expected to acquire in class and demonstrate on the examination.

Supplementary Documents

Alongside the educational standards, the federal states have agreed on subject-specific arrangements that further specify these standards (the so-called “Begleitende Dokumente”, or supplementary documents).

Tasks

The IQB Task Browser provides access to exam tasks from the pools that have already been used in the federal states, provided that the necessary usage rights have been acquired. These exam tasks provide guidance and can be used as a point of reference and for practice.
