Research Areas

The IQB is one of the leading institutions in the field of empirical educational research in Germany. All research at the IQB is conducted in accordance with guidelines on good scientific practice. The Ombuds Committee at the IQB provides advice on these matters.

Research at the IQB focuses on generating insights that can help strengthen quality improvement and quality assurance in education. Interdisciplinary in nature, it addresses the institute’s core tasks and their ongoing development, both in content and methodology. Research at the IQB focuses on three key areas. Another focus is on research projects concerning research data, which are based at the FDZ.

Optimising IQB Assessment Instruments and Analytical Methods

Methodologically oriented research at the IQB aims to refine the assessment instruments developed at the institute in order to ensure high data quality and to make their use more efficient.

Data-informed Quality Improvement

One of the aims of research at the IQB is to support the federal states, schools, and teachers in implementing the educational standards. A key part of this work involves providing evidence-based materials, such as exemplary learning tasks, test items and exam questions, subject-specific didactic guidelines, and practice-focused professional development approaches for data-based instructional development.

Responding to Diversity in Learning Needs

The IQB carries out research projects that the KMK considers central to educational policy, with the aim of supporting decision-makers in educational policy, educational administration, and educational practice in making informed decisions. A particular focus lies on research questions of how to address diverse learning needs and conditions.
