For more than 20 years, Germany has been building up an extensive collection of data within the framework of international and national school performance studies (e.g. PISA, IGLU, IQB Trends in Student Achievement), which enables systematic analyses of framework conditions, processes and outcomes in the education system.

This potential can only be fully exploited if researchers from different disciplines have access to the data.

To make this possible, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) established the Research Data Centre (FDZ at the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) in 2007. Since 2011, the FDZ at the IQB has been part of the Centre for International Student Assessment (ZIB).

The FDZ at IQB is intensively involved in the further development of the research data infrastructure in the education sector. It fulfils two core tasks:

  • It makes the data sets of national and international school performance studies in Germany available to the scientific community for re- and secondary analyses.
  • It is active in the promotion of young researchers by offering advice for young researchers and events for the methodological training of young researchers (e.g. twice-yearly academies on methods of empirical educational research).

Our collection guideline of the FDZ at IQB can be found here. Details of which studies are available at the FDZ and how to submit an application, along with further information, can be found on our pages, which you can access via the navigation tab on the left-hand side of the screen.

Please also read our Tasks and Procedures, especially the special rules regarding novel comparisons between German federal states.

The FDZ at IQB is certified with the CoreTrustSeal for trustworthy repositories. The FDZ at IQB's self-assessment together with the comments by the reviewers can be found here. Further information on the certification can be found here.

Logo VerbundFDB

The FDZ at IQB is one of the partners forming the Verbund Forschungsdaten Bildung (VerbundFDB), which aims to establish the technological, organisational and legal infrastructure in order to

  • secure research data from empirical educational research in a protected environment
  • offer these research data and tools in a legally compliant manner
  • provide information about the research data and instruments at a central location
  • qualify and train researchers on data management issues.

The FDZ at IQB supports data producers and researchers to make their (meta)data

  • F(indable)
  • A(ccessible)
  • I(nteroperable) and
  • R(eusable)

in order to fulfill the FAIR-Principles.

The FDZ at IQB can also be found on re3data.org.

Data sets available at the FDZ

You can apply to the FDZ at IQB for access to the following data sets for re- and secondary analyses, among others

  • representative school achievement studies, such as DESI, ELEMENT, IGLU, IQB National Assessment Studies and IQB Trends in Student Achievement, KESS, LAU, PISA, TIMSS
  • studies on specific aspects of competence acquisition, e.g. BiSpra, BiSS-EILe, FUnDuS, KuL, LISA, MEZ, MoMa, Stereotype Threat, TVD
  • studies on teacher education, e.g. BilWiss, LINK, ProFeL, ProLeLe, proPHI, ProwiN, Systemdenken
  • studies on special educational needs, such as BiLieF, IQB Trends in Student Achievement, LABEL
  • studies on early childhood education, e.g. BiKS, BRISE, PHONO, SEIKA
  • studies on vocational education and training, e.g. studies of the ASCOT network (CoBALIT, CoSMed, DomPL-IK, EKGe, TeKoP, TEMA)
  • studies on all-day schools, such as Aufmerksamkeit, StEG
  • studies with focus on Berlin, e.g. BELLA, ELEMENT, LABEL

  • studies with fokus onhigher education, e. g. KAT-HS, Ko-NaMa

You can find a constantly updated overview of the FDZ data offer here.

Promotion of young researchers by the FDZ

The FDZ at IQB offers FDZ Academies on methods of empirical educational research every six months in spring and autumn.

The training courses aim to impart methodological skills for analysing data from educational studies. All workshops at the academies are conducted by recognised experts.

You can find information about our training courses and the registration modalities here.

Submission of data to the FDZ

Do you have a data set that includes competence measurements? Please feel free to contact us to discuss the possibility of archiving this data set at our FDZ. In doing so, we consider it important to take into account and balance the interests of the data producers and the data users.

If you need support in documenting the data, we will be happy to assist you within the scope of our resources.

By handing over your data to the FDZ, you are making a valuable contribution to the in-depth and comprehensive use of the scientific potential of existing data sets.
