Project description
The research project had the objective of developing and testing a technology-oriented instrument for the assessment of vocational competencies in elderly care. The instrument was designed to combine practical usability and scientific soundness. The aim was to develop an empirically validated competence model and assessment instrument to enable valid and internationally compatible measurement of vocational competencies using new technology-based assessment methods based on probabilistic test theory. Within the project, multiple theoretical aspects where focused on: (1) The theory-based development of a model and corresponding items for mapping vocational competencies aimed for heuristic modelling of competencies in elderly care based on relevant theoretical models and results of expert interviews. (2) The curricular and ecological validation of the competence model and the measurement instrument served to specify the competence model and derive vocation specific critical incidents. (3) The psychometric analysis of measurement instruments and IRT-based modelling of competencies focused on questions of empirical mappability of the structural competence model and the empirical relations between test items and competence dimensions, especially regarding emotional components of the competence. (4) Through cooperation between science and practice, active participation of members of the care sector for a participative and joint development of a model of competence was reached. Thus, broad endorsement and practical applicability of the developed assessment method within the community of practice was ensured. - A heuristic model of vocational competencies in nursing was developed on the basis of analyzing vocational situations, theoretical and empirical models of competencies of vocational and economic education and nursing education as well as curricular contexts. The model is divided into a resident-centered, an organization-centered and a self-centered domain of competence. Selected aspects of the structural competence model were depicted in characteristic situations and corresponding stimuli and indicators were developed. These rendered visible individual levels of competence. The assessment of competence uses realistic video vignettes of authentic vocational actions that were integrated into a virtual test platform. The validity of test items was secured multiply by curricular validation, content-based validation in the form of expert interviews and construct validation in the form of a pilot study. The design followed probabilistic test theory and aimed for being analyzed on the basis of IRT models. (IQB)
