Project description

The project examines the language skills of recently immigrated students in German (the language of instruction) and English (the first foreign language taught at school) and how these are related to each other. The data collection in the project was accompanied by a scoping review that looked at the state of research on academic and language skills of recently immigrated students to German-speaking countries. Two strategies were pursued to answer the research questions: First, the analysis of existing data (secondary data analysis, NEPS) and second, the collection of new data (primary data surveys). Various survey instruments and methods were used for the primary data surveys. Data was collected on reading skills in German, receptive vocabulary in German and English, and language awareness. The students were also asked about individual characteristics using a questionnaire. Newly immigrated students at lower secondary level in North Rhine-Westphalia who have been attending school in Germany for at least one year and are already (partially) integrated into mainstream education took part in the survey. The comparison group consists of students from the same classes and grades who have been attending German schools since the beginning of first grade. In total, data is available from 344 students in grades 5-10. The results provide initial insights into the language skills of newly immigrated pupils compared to their peers in regular classes and serve as a basis for further projects. (IQB)
