The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) provides several rich datasets which are available for public scientific use. The datasets include valuable information allowing the exploration of a plethora of research questions regarding the effectiveness of educational systems, international and national comparisons of student literacy in reading, mathematics and science, trends in student literacy over time, the interrelatedness of student literacy and personal and institutional background variables, and much more. The PISA samples are carefully drawn to allow for representative inferences on the target population of 15-year old students within a country. The data structure necessitates special analysis methods which are frequently not taught at university courses in psychological or educational measurement.
The workshop introduces the basic methodological concepts of PISA and gives a practice-oriented introduction in the analysis of PISA data. The objectives of the workshop:
- To introduce the methodological approach of PISA
- To explain the structure of the PISA datasets
- To outline pathways to the analysis of PISA data
- To collect practical experience with PISA data
The workshop covers the following topics: sampling, scaling, weighting, replicate weights, plausible values, significance tests, trend analysis and reporting from a practice-oriented view. All analyses carried out in the workshop are described in the PISA 2006 data analysis manual which can be downloaded from www.pisa.oecd.org. There will be oral presentations as well as hands-on exercises.
Toward the end of the workshop we will have an extensive practical segment with group work. The results produced here will be presented by the participants within the workshop. Laptop computers as well as additional material will be provided within the workshop.
Intended Audience
Graduate students in the measurement field, measurement professionals and anyone interested in the analysis of PISA data with a profound training in empirical research methods, prior practice in the analysis of PISA is not required.
